Study day
Saturday 1st November
10.30 til 4.30pm
Bodhicharyavatara, the ‘Way of the Bodhisattva’,
Please join me for a day retreat focusing on study, and meeting once again the Bodhicharyavatara, the ‘Way of the Bodhisattva’, a classic and much-loved Dharma text written by the 7th century CE monk Shantideva, with a weave of deep teaching and poetry, heartfelt devotion and the aspiration to benefit all beings with our practice. This text gives us the verses of the Triratna Buddhist Community’s Seven-Fold Puja in its opening chapters, which we explored together at the start of this series.
We’ve been covering the whole text in a series of study days, and some of you have shared this journey with me and attended previously. It’s also fine just to come for any days you can make – you don’t have to have been to the previous one.
On Saturday Ist November 2025 we will be looking at chapter 9 which explores the place of wisdom and understanding in the Bodhisattva path. This chapter takes the form of a dialogue between Shantideva and his contemporaries, so it’s a rich and deep dive into Indian thought in the 7th Centrury CE. We’ll look together at the central Dharma theme of absolute and relative reality, bringing the chapter to life by acting a part of it out, with time for discussion and meditation. An introduction to a vast topic – let the aspiriation to understand more fully shape our path.
Open to anyone who attends Triratna Leeds Buddhist Centre and is familiar with meditation.
Please bring some vegetarian food to share for lunch. There is no charge for the day, we do though invite donations to help us cover the costs, and to support Leeds Buddhist Centre. We suggest donations like other full day events, e.g. £30/£50, and want people to feel able to attend, regardless of what they can afford, so please just give what you can.
