Study evening – Phena Sutta

“Like a tiny drop of dew, or a bubble floating in a stream;
Like a flash of lightning in a summer cloud,
Or a flickering lamp, an illusion, a phantom, or a dream.”
“So is all conditioned existence to be seen.”

This beauiful passage is found in the Diamond Sutra, part of the Perfection of Wisdom teachings – but where do these metaphors come from originally, and what was the Buddha pointing at when he chose these images? How can we relate to them in our own experience, so we are reaching beyond the poetry to the meaning behind the verse?

Join me for a study evening at Leeds Buddhist Centre  on Friday 1st August 7 – 9pm exploring these images as they are found in the early Buddhist tradition, in particular in the teaching on the five skandhas found in the Phena Sutta of the Pali canon. Open to all.
